Lyonel Feininger. Master of Modernism
29.03.2023 to 8.01.2024
Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956) is one of the most important representatives of the art of Classical Modernism. At the age of 16, the New York-born artist arrived in Germany, where he began an impressive career. The exhibition provides an overview of the multi faceted work of the caricaturist, graphic artist, painter, Bauhaus master and photographer. Joinin stations invite visitors to see, hear and discover the multi faceted work. In addition, the creative Feininger family of artists and the eventful history of the museum are also highlighted.
In the heart of the World Heritage town of Quedlinburg you will find the only Lyonel Feininger Museum in the world!
Hermann Klumpp (1902–1987) from Quedlinburg already had a doctorate in law when he began his studies at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Here he formed a close, lasting friendship with the Bauhaus master Lyonel Feininger. When his works were defamed as “degenerate” by the National Socialists in 1937, Feininger returned to the USA. Before leaving the country, he gave an extensive collection of his works to Klumpp, who kept it hidden in his hometown and thus saved it from destruction. The Klumpp Collection became the reason for founding the Museum Lyonel Feininger in 1986.
